چکیده

A systematic comparison of thermal scaling properties of pipe and channel flows is presented. DNS data are used to compute thermal statistics for friction Reynolds numbers of 180 and 395 and Prandtl numbers ranging between 0.025 and 7. A distinct four layer regime for the thermal field is clearly identified in both channel and pipe flows. The analysis reveals that the balance breaking and exchange of leading order terms in the mean energy equation that occurs across an intermediate layer is similar to the exchange of terms in the mean momentum equation. The present analysis suggests that, at high Peclet numbers in the four layer regime, the scaling characteristics of the temperature field become increasingly similar to those of the momentum field at high Reynolds number. The intermediate normalisation found by adopting the theory used for the momentum field provides a convincing scaling for the mean temperature and turbulent heat flux profiles for both pipe and channel flows. In contrast to velocity field statistics, the inner normalized mean temperature and heat flux profiles show significant discrepancies between pipe and channel flows. © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. Scaling properties of the equation for passive scalar transport in wall-bounded turbulent flows

Data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of fully-developed turbulent channel flows subjected to a constant surface heat-flux are used to explore the scaling behaviours admitted by the mean thermal energy equation. Following the framework of Wei et al. (2005) [1,2], the analysis employs a theory based on the magnitude ordering of terms in the mean thermal energy equation of wall-bounded tur...

Large eddy simulation of compressible turbulent pipe flow with heat transfer

A compressible finite volume formulation for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent channel flows was extended to solve the turbulent flows in pipes and annular passages. A general finite volume scheme was developed based on conservation equations in Cartesian coordinates with non-Cartesian control volumes. A dual-time stepping approach with time derivative preconditioning was employed and ti...

Direct Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Heat Transfer in Pipe Flows with various Prandtl Numbers

The direct numerical simulation (DNS) of heat transfer in a fully developed turbulent pipe flow with for various Prandtle numbers are performed to obtain statistical quantities such as turbulent heat flux, and temperature variance. Main emphasis is placed on Prandtl number effects on turbulent heat transfer in pipe flow. Probability density functions and joint probability density functions of v...

Overview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows

An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...

A New Model for Prediction of Heat Eddy Diffusivity in Pipe Expansion Turbulent Flows

A new model to calculate heat eddy diffusivity in separating and reattaching flows based on modification of constant Prt is proposed. This modification is made using an empirical correlation between maximum Nusselt number and entrance Reynolds number. The model includes both the simplicity of Prt=0.9 assumption and the accuracy of two-equation heat-transfer models. Furthermore, an appropriate l...
